Mary did ya know?

It’s Christmas time and while there is all this hype about Jesus (which is super great) I want to show a little love to his mama. So lets hear it for Mary everyone!! BTW I am working in Luke 1:26-45 when the Angel appears to Mary.

Mary is real content with her life right now. She is young, she is engaged to Joseph and she’s just kinda living life ya know? But then Gabriel comes along and is like, (Please read the following in like a skater dude kinda tone) “Hey Mary! God thinks you’re really cool so don’t be scared that I am just kinda poppin’ up like this. I know you are engaged and a virgin and that’s cool and all but uh you’re gonna be a mommy to the Son of the Most High”. Then Mary goes… “How?” Gabriel (who is an angel by the way) says woah Mary, “For nothing is impossible with God.” And Mary goes, “Yup, dude you’re right. I am the Lords Servant.”

In case you did not know this is not exactly how it went down and I would highly encourage you to get the full low down by reading Luke 1:26-45!!

Alright, so lets relate this whole thang back to us. Mary is youngggg and engaged to Joesph (How cute and exciting right). So imagine if you’re a junior in high school and an angel comes to you and says, “Hey you’re going to have a baby.” If you’re anything like me there are a couple thoughts that would fly through your head:

1.Holy cannoli my parents are going to kill me

  1. How am I supposed to play volleyball (insert your hobby here) and make good grades when I’m having a child?

  2. What are people going to think of me?

But wait…there is more. Imagine you’re a junior in high school and you’re engaged to a really awesome guy and an angel comes to you and says, “Hey lady you’re having a baby!” On top of those 3 other thoughts you’d probably think:

  1. My really awesome fiancé who I love a lot is going to think I cheated on him

  2. He is going to break up with me

So while I am over here thinking of these extremely selfish thoughts this is what Mary said, “I am the Lord’s servant…May it be to me as you have said.”

My response to Mary: WOAHHH, GIRLLL!! That is exactly why the Lord picked you. She said, “Yup I am all in!” and ya know why it was so simple for her to make that choice? because Mary KNOWS three things:

  1. Luke 1:28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

  2. Luke 1:32-33 “He (her son) will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”

  3. Luke 1:37For nothing is impossible with God.”

So as I sit here and read over this I am slightly embarrassed of the thoughts I had. If Mary can say, “Yeah Lord sign me up, I am your person, I trust you!!” when she is young, when she is a virgin, when she is engaged, when she could be stoned, when a whole laundry list of things could go wrong. Then why can’t I trust God?

I lose my trust in God when I lose perspective of #1 and #3 of what Mary KNOWS. The Lord is with us, he is there walking right beside us with our life all planned out. Nothing is impossible with God, not a thing, not a one. These two simple affirmations just blow my mind because the words literally lift the pressure off of you! Mary could have easily said, “nah, bein’ a young engaged pregnant lady ain’t my thang” BUT she didn’t. By her saying yes look at what happened. The #2 of Mary KNOWS, “His kingdom will never end.” So guess what I am gonna do…I am going to trust HIM. And when I falter (which I will) I am going to bring myself back to the Mary KNOWS. What about you?

Maybe your saying, “Okay syd, yeah that sounds great and all but Luke 1:28 says “Greetings, you who are highly favored!” and who is to say that you’re highly favored or I am highly favored?, Huh?” Alright, so if you want to know more then you’re just going to have to wait until tomorrow to read what I have to say about that!! However, until tomorrow read Luke 1: 26 all the way through 56 and just think through the passage.

Also I would love to give a shout out to Mrs. Mo Isom Aiken! Last week I went to The Grove (a women’s night) hosted by Passion City church in Atlanta and she gave me the inspiration to dive into Mary!!
